BYU Guard Alex Barcello Named AP Honorable Mention All-American

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – BYU basketball senior guard Alex Barcello has been the leader of a Cougars team that is 20-6 and a 6-seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Associated Press recognized Barcello’s leadership and play on the court on Tuesday, where Barcello was named an AP Honorable Mention All-American.

After transferring from the University of Arizona in 2019, Barcello has been a two-year starter for BYU. He was more of a role player as a junior within the first year of Mark Pope’s program. Now he’s the bonafide number one guy averaging 15.9 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in 31 minutes of action per game.

Barcello was one of 42 players recognized as an AP All-America Honorable Mention selection.

BYU and Barcello are currently here in Indianapolis, preparing for their first-round matchup against either Michigan State or UCLA at Hinkle Fieldhouse this Saturday night. This is BYU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years.

Despite being a senior this season for the Cougars, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and a blanket waiver from the NCAA, Barcello has the opportunity to return to BYU next season. BYU coach Mark Pope publicly put out a recruiting pitch to his senior class, including Barcello, to challenge BYU fans to recruit his seniors back for one more year.

First things first for the Honorable Mention All-American in his first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since his freshman season at Arizona.
