BYU Dips Into Special Teams Bag Of Tricks With Onside Kick

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –Â BYU is pulling out all the stops in Texas, surprising Colorado with an onside kick that Ethan Slade recovered with the Cougars leading 10-0.
No. 17 BYU ends the 2024 campaign in the Valero Alamo Bowl against Heisman Trophy-winner Travis Hunter and the No. 23 Colorado Buffaloes.

After a short drive ended in a 51-yard field goal, BYU led 10-0. Not satisfied with the two-score advantage, special teams coach Kelly Poppinga opted for the onside kick, hoping to catch the Buffaloes off guard.

A well-struck kick from Will Ferrin bounced high before being reeled in by Ethan Slade. The drive ended in a turnover but made it clear that BYU is going deep into its playbook tonight.
The Cougars still lead 10-0 after a missed 48-yard field goal attempt from Alejandro Mata.
