SALT LAKE CITY – The Mr. Mac Utah County High School Player of the Week is awarded each week to the top prep football players in Utah County. It honors athletes for their performances on the gridiron and exceptional play. Our winner this week was American Fork High School quarterback Nate Childs.
Utah County Player of the Week – Nate Childs, American Fork High School
Childs and the American Fork Cavemen took on longtime rival Lehi in the second round of the 6A Playoffs. The game was a slugfest from the start with both teams seeking to assert themselves on the other. The Pioneers drew first blood with a Legend Glasker touchdown pass before Childs dove in from one yard out to even the score. After Lehi went ahead again in the second quarter, Childs responded with a touchdown pass to Christian Hanshaw to even the score once again.
Bode Hammond’s 25-yard field goal just before halftime saw Lehi take a 17-14 into halftime. American Fork emerged from the break and buckled down defensively, yielding a lone field goal in the second half. Childs added another one-year touchdown plunge in the fourth quarter to regain the lead for the Cavemen and they saw out the rest of the game to celebrate the 21-20 victory. Childs completed 19-of-31 passes for 208 yards and one touchdown while adding his pair of rushing touchdowns in the win.
