Utah Women Get Big Upset Win, 78-67 Over No. 3 Notre Dame

SALT LAKE CITY— It’s been a wild week for the Utah women’s basketball team. On Saturday, the Utes upset No. 3 Notre Dame, 78-67, in the final game of the Cayman Island Classic.
This is the program’s highest-ranked win outside of the Huntsman Center in school history. Gavin Petersen improves to 3-1 as head coach at Utah, and 6-2 overall on the season.

“I am extremely proud of our team, they showed resilience tonight, they were dialed in today and executed,” head coach Gavin Petersen said post-game.
The Utes were led by Gianna Kneepkens 16 points, while Kennady McQueen added 15 of her own. The two combined to shoot 9-of-20 from the field and 5-of-13 from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, Jenn Johnson and Matyson Wilke each added 14 points, with Johnson also grabbing 6 rebounds. Maye Touré finished with 9 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Good Shooting Helps Utah Knock Off Notre Dame
The Utes converted shot 45.9% from the court, compared to just 40.3% for Notre Dame. Utah shot 14-of-24 in the second half, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range. In the fourth quarter, the Utes came up clutch by converting 11-of-13 free throws. Meanwhile, the Irish shot just 10-of-31 in the second half.
Utah finished with 17 assists on 28 made field goals, while Notre Dame had 12 assists on 25 made field goals. The Utes had to battle a tough Notre Dame team on the boards, they finished with 32, while Notre Dame grabbed 37.
