SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Football head coach Kyle Whittingham met with the media today following their first practice of week three. Coach provided a number of positive updates, including a big one on the backup quarterback battle.
“Right now, Cam Rising No. 1, Isaac Wilson No. 2, that’s where we’re at,” Whittingham shared. “Three and four, still working through that but without much debate Cam is 1, Isaac is 2.”

Spring ball was key to Isaac Wilson’s performance in camp
Wilson has created a positive buzz in fall camp. That included a string of solid practices and a particularly strong performance in last week’s scrimmage.
The 6-foot, 200-pound freshman joined the program back in January which played a significant role in him earning the backup job.
“Huge, he would not have had a chance, in my opinion, if he had not the spring experience and summer experience for that matter,” Whittingham said.
“Isaac has continued to get better each day. He’s seeing the field better, making better decisions. He’s got a live arm, ball comes out of his hand like it’s supposed to. Very mobile, that’s another facet- another strength of his is being to have escapability in the pocket. He senses the rush very well and is able to get himself out of jams and still make a play on the move.” – Kyle Whittingham on Isaac Wilson
And the young quarterback echoed that sentiment.
“Oh my gosh, coach Lud’s offense, this is a complicated offense but it’s needed,” Wilson said. “Just coming in early, learning the x’s and o’s, has really pushed me forward. Our bread and butter plays, aren’t that bread and butter to most people. So getting here early has really boost me forward.
Isaac Wilson’s mindset in this competition
Coming into a collegiate program is a challenge for any freshman. It’s a particularly difficult adjustment for quarterbacks. However, Wilson’s focus has been to just keep his head down and work.
“I gotta work, just gotta keep working,” Wilson said. “I’m just a freshman, I haven’t earned anything yet. The coaches always say, we need the team more than they need us, and I stay true to that.”
Wilson is a promising young talent. He has all the tools to compete at this level. He also has held to a pretty grounded perspective and motivation.
“All of it, my teammates, my family, just playing this game means everything to me,” Wilson said. “I just want to come out here and ball, do my best, learn everything, and just have fun.”
Soon he will suit up in a Utah uniform in Rice Eccles Stadium. It’s a moment that Wilson is looking forward to with great anticipation.
“I’ve always been a Utah fan since I was little,” Wilson said. “Just being on that field will truly be everything to me.”
