PROVO, Utah – BYU freshman Egor Demin received his recruiting ranking from industry-standard 247Sports. It’s a historic one for BYU basketball.
The 6-foot-9 guard from Russia was rated a five-star prospect for the class of 2024 and is the class’s No. 16 overall prospect.
Incoming BYU freshman Egor Demin is a jumbo guard from Russia who arrived with one-and-done buzz. He’s being slotted as a five-star prospect – the first in BYU program history.

Demin becomes the first five-star recruit in the internet era for BYU basketball.
The Cougars have had a brief history with blue-chip recruits before the internet rankings, such as Shawn Bradley in the 1990 recruiting class. Danny Ainge was a Parade All-American in Oregon.

But in the internet era, Demin tops BYU’s highest-rated prospects. He passes Kanon Catchings, who also signed in BYU’s 2024 recruiting class and is entering his freshman season this winter.
It’s still to be determined how high Demin’s rating catapults BYU in the 2024 freshman class rankings. Before Demin landed the five-star grade, BYU was 12th in the 247Sports Team Composite recruiting rankings.
The former Real Madrid star arrived on campus in Provo in June. He’s been participating in one-hour summer practices in preparation for the upcoming season under first-year head coach Kevin Young.
“We are thrilled that Egor and his family are joining us at BYU,” Kevin Young said in June when Demin signed with BYU. “He is a special talent with an extremely bright future, and he plays the game the right way. At 6-foot-9, his passing, playmaking and shooting will fit seamlessly into our style of play. Egor has proven himself among the best prospects in Europe in recent years. We look forward to helping him grow and develop on and off the court.”
Along with Demin, BYU’s 2024 recruiting class includes Catchings from Overtime Elite, Corner Canyon High forward Brody Kozlowski, Guard Elijah Crawford from the Brewster Academy, Brooks Bahr out of Keller, Texas, and Khadim Mboup from NBA Academy Africa.
