Utah State’s Alfred Edwards Selected In First Round Of USFL Draft

LOGAN, Utah – Former Utah State left tackle Alfred Edwards was selected in the first round of the USFL draft by the Philadelphia Stars.
Edwards was selected as the sixth pick of the first round in a draft held on Tuesday, February 21. In all, 80 players were selected in the ten round draft.

Edwards started all 11 games he appeared in this season, playing 800 snaps, second most on the team. Overall, he had an 84 percent performance grade this season with a season high of 94 percent in a win over Air Force.
He was the only USU player named to the All-Mountain West First Team in 2022. Edwards is also the only Aggie to be receive all-conference recognition for a second time after receiving honorable mention All-Mountain West recognition last season.

A 6’7 left tackle out of Redlands Senior High School in Redlands, California, Alfred Edwards joined the Aggies in 2017, using his redshirt as a freshman.

As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Edwards played all 12 games with 11 starts at left tackle with a total of 662 offensive snaps. As a sophomore in 2018, Edwards played 12 games at left tackle with 764 offensive snaps.

During the 2020 COVID-19 season, Edwards started all six games at left tackle, playing in 275 offensive snaps. This past season, he earned All-Mountain West honorable mention, while starting all 13 games at left tackle, missing one game due to injury.

In June 2021, the USFL announced it would return for a season with eight teams in 2022. The league’s entire regular season schedule was played in only two games in Birmingham, Alabama. However, all the games were broadcasted nationally by NBC or Fox.
In the 2023 season, scheduled to begin on April 15 & 16, will be played in four host cities. Birmingham, Alabama will host the Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers. Memphis, Tennessee will host the Memphis Showboats and Houston Gamblers. Detroit, Michigan will host the Michigan Panthers and Philadelphia Stars. Canton, Ohio will host the New Jersey Generals and Pittsburgh Maulers.
