SALT LAKE CITY – Former BYU and NFL legend Steve Young commented on the San Francisco 49ers’ dire quarterback situation during the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles hosted the Niners at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, January 29.

During the opening quarter, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury and exited the game. Purdy was replaced by journeyman and fourth-string QB Josh Johnson.

Amid the grim signal-caller situation, Young joked on Twitter about entering the game for his former team.

@49ersParadise asked the former BYU great if he was at the game.

“Paging @SteveYoungQB are you at the game? I’ll buy you a jersey,” 49ersParadise tweeted at Young.

“Warming up in the parking lot, let me know,” Young responded.

Prior to the game, Young shared a photo of himself and Jerry Rice after San Francisco’s 49-26 win over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX on January 29, 1995.

Before leaving the NFC title game, Purdy was 2/2 passing for 19 yards. In the second half, Johnson suffered a head injury and was replaced by the injured Purdy. Before Johnson exited the game, he was 7/13 passing for 74 yards.

Prior to his professional career, Young played quarterback at BYU from 1980-83.

San Francisco’s game against Philadelphia is televised on FOX.

Brock Purdy Injury

Purdy was questionable to return to the NFC championship game on Sunday after he took a hard hit to his right elbow in the first quarter.

Purdy was drilled in the arm by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick on a play that was ruled a fumble.
