Southern Utah Sees Winning Streak Snapped At Seattle University

SALT LAKE CITY – The Southern Utah men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end with a road defeat to the Seattle University Redhawks.
The Redhawks hosted the Thunderbirds at Redhawk Center on Saturday, January 21.

The T-Birds battled against the Redhawks in what was a close contest for the majority of the afternoon. At halftime, the Redhawks owned a single-possession lead, 36-34.
Following the break, the battle continued until the 10:31 mark. With the Thunderbirds up by a point, Riley Grigsby buried a three-pointer to give Seattle a 48-46 lead. The Redhawks held the scoring advantage and much more until the final buzzer sounded.
Seattle stretched its lead to 23 points at one point and outscored SUU by 19 points over the final 20 minutes of action. The Redhawks flew past the T-Birds for a 21-point victory.
Southern Utah finished the game shooting 34.7 percent overall and only 1-25 for 4.0 percent on three-pointers. Seattle shot 46.2 percent from the floor, including 37.1 percent from distance.
Seattle had 11 more assists than SUU.
Three Thunderbirds scored in double figures. Tevian Jones led Southern Utah with 21 points on 8-17 field goals. He added 10 rebounds and two steals.

Maizen Fausett poured in 16 points and Jason Spurgin added 10 points.
The Thunderbirds’ second unit combined to score only four points.
Grigsby led the Redhawks with 33 points.
With the loss, the Thunderbirds dropped to a 14-7 record this season, including 6-2 in Western Athletic Conference games. It was Southern Utah’s first loss since January 2 against the Tarleton State Texans.

Southern Utah’s next game is at home against the Utah Valley Wolverines on Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. (MDT). The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Thunderbirds have only lost consecutive games in one two-game stretch this season. Kansas and Texas State beat Southern Utah in back-to-back contests in November 2022. The T-Birds haven’t dropped multiple games in a row since then.
