ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Trail Blazers were outscored by 19 points in the second half as they dropped their fourth straight, falling 78-53 against Sam Houston.

The Trail Blazers (9-8, 1-3) hosted the Sam Houston Bearkats (12-5, 2-3) at Burns Arena in a WAC matchup on Saturday, January 14.

Losers of three straight, Utah Tech has fallen on hard times recently. In their most recent action, the Trail Blazers lost 85-72 against Stephen F. Austin.

Sam Houston has alternated wins and losses over their last six games. In their last game, the Bearkats fell 86-74 against Southern Utah.

Frank Staine was the only Trail Blazer to reach double-figures, finishing with 10 points. 20 turnovers as a team ended any chance of a win before getting started.

Qua Grant led all scorers with 15 points, five assists and three steals. Lamar Wilkerson added 13 points in the Bearkats victory.

First Half

Staine opened the scoring by hitting a three as Utah Tech started hot.

The Trail Blazers used an 8-3 run to take a nine point lead with 11:10 left in the half

Sam Houston struck back, scoring eight straight to cut the deficit to 18-17.

Back-to-back threes from Noa Gonsalves and Tanner Christensen put UTU up 24-17.

From there, Sam Houston put the clamps down, limiting the Trail Blazers to just three more points in the half. While Utah Tech struggled offensively, the Bearkats exploded on an 18-3 run to take a 35-29 lead at the break.
