Woodbury’s Late Three Leads UVU, Winning Streak At Eleven

OREM, Utah – Trey Woodbury must have a short memory, that’s the only way to explain his 26-foot three that gave UVU a late lead on their way to a 71-67 win, their 11th straight win.
Utah Valley (12-4, 4-0) took their ten game winning streak on the road to face the California Baptist Lancers (10-7, 2-2) on Wednesday, January 11.

The Wolverines knocked off Texas-Rio Grande Valley 75-61 to extend their winnning streak to double-figures as they improved to 4-0 in WAC play.
Cal-Baptist has won two straight, defeating New Mexico State 70-61 in Las Cruces, N.M. in their most recent game.
Trey Woodbury led the Wolverines with 18 points, overcoming a difficult second half of shooting to score seven straight points in the final minutes, including a deep three with 13.5 seconds left that turned a two point deficit into a 67-66 lead. Le’tre Darthard added 16, Justin harmon scored 14 points and Tim Fuller added 12.

Taran Armstrong’s 16 points led the Lancers with Riley Battin netting 15 in the loss.

First Half
Cal-Baptist looked like the team riding a ten game winning streak, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead before Utah Valley got on the scoreboard. The Lancers would open a 10-4 lead, limiting UVU to two field goals in the first five minutes of play.

Trey Woodbury was able to find the range for the Wolverines, following a driving dunk with a deep three as UVU fought back to within a point at 10-9.
Later in the half with the Lancers enjoying an 11-point lead, UVU was able to make a run.

Over the final 4:56 of the half, UVU went on an 11-2 run, cutting the Lancer lead to 33-31 at the half.

Justin Harmon led all-scorers with 12 first half points and five rebounds. Former Utah Ute Riley Battin led the Lancers with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Second Half
The Lancers and Wolverines traded threes to open the second half.
UVU made six of their first seven shots in the second half to take their first lead of the evening, 46-43 when Le’tre Darthard hit a three, giving them a 46-43 advantage.

Darthard was a big part of the Wolverines early success, going 4-of-4 from the field for 10 points in the opening eight minutes of the half.
California Baptist fought back, retaking a 49-48 lead with 11:56 remaining.

Both teams seemed to get tight, trading turnovers for missed shots. The Lancers and Wolverines combined for two made field goals over a nearly four minute stretch.
Tim Caesar accounted for the only two UVU field goals in almost six minutes of play as the Lancer defense created a series of turnovers.

A deep three from Reed Nottage at the 6:45 mark put the Lancers up 56-53. After two free throws from Woodbury, Taran Armstrong hit another triple, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
After Tim Fuller hit a layup for UVU, the Lancers went on a 7-2 run over the next 3:26, taking a 66-60 lead into the final media timeout.
Two Woodbury layups brought UVU within 66-64. After forcing a missed shot and defensive rebound from Aziz Bandaogo, the Wolverines had the ball with 25 seconds remaining.
Following a timeout, Woodbury made the play of the night, hitting a deep three to give UVU the lead with 13.5 seconds remaining.
Justin Harmon would force a steal on the other end and Darthard hit two free throws to take a three point lead with 4.2 seconds left.

After playing the free throw game, UVU came away with the 71-67 win.
