SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau has begun his 2023 campaign with a top-10 finish at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii, six shots back of champion Jon Rahm.
Wonderful Start To The New Year For Finau
Rahm concluded the tournament at 27-under-par, while Finau shot 21-under-par to finish in a share for 7th.
Remarkably, through 72 holes of golf, or four rounds, Finau only scored a bogey on three occasions. During the second round, Finau bogeyed consecutive holes and on Saturday Finau concluded his spell of Bogeys on the par 4 10th. Comparatively, Finau found 24 birdies throughout the week.
It was an impressive outing for Finau who statistically played incredibly well. During his final round on Sunday, Finau found 73% of fairways and a remarkable 94% of greens in regulation. His driving distance was down due to the narrow landing zones throughout Kapalua Plantation Course.
Unfortunately, Finau lost the tournament throughout the third round. On Saturday, Finau still managed to shoot four under par for the round but struggled with his ball striking as he averaged just 53% of fairways and 67% of greens in regulation. Despite the struggles, Finau fought hard to scramble efficiently and remained hopeful going into the final round.
Rahm stole the show with an impressive 10-under-par final round to claim the tournament by two strokes. Collin Morikawa finished in second place while Max Homa and Tom Hoge shared third. Up-and-coming prodigy Tom Kim and J.J. Spaun enjoyed a share of fifth while Finau split the chocolates with K.H. Lee, Scottie Scheffler, and Max Fitzpatrick in seventh.
Impressively, Finau notched his 216th career PGA Tour start this week in Hawaii. It also marked his 56th top 10 finish on the PGA Tour. Finau has finished in the top 10 on 25.9% of career PGA Tour starts, remarkably.
