SALT LAKE CITY- Utah linebacker Ethan Calvert is heading to the NCAA Transfer Portal according to Chris Hummer of 247 Sports. The move is not entirely surprising considering Calvert has been plagued with injuries since he first arrived on campus in 2021. Utah has been recruiting at a very high level at linebacker making Calvert’s path to play time particularly hard.

Calvert was a prize get for the Utes in the 2021 class coming in as a 4-star recruit and earned some immediate playtime last season in Utah’s season opener against Weber State. Unfortunately, Calvert was hurt in the game and missed the remainder of the 2021 season.
Ethan Calvert As A Ute
After miss most of last year, Calvert did find his way onto the field for the Utes in 2022 in 10 games both on defense and special teams. His highlights include three tackles on the season, two of which came in the Stanford game and a stop on special teams in the Southern Utah game.
Calvert’s brother Josh is also a linebacker for the Utes after transferring from Washington in 2021 and has seen limited action as well.
Important Dates To Watch
The NCAA Transfer Portal Window for football officially opened on Monday, December 5, 2022, and will remain open through January 18, 2023.
Calvert will certainly not be the last transfer out of the Utah program, but it could be a while or a very slow trickle with the Utes heading back to Pasadena to play in their second Rose Bowl on January 2 of 2023. With that said, it seems reasonable to expect most transfers out for the Utes to happen after their big bowl game against Penn State.
Conversely, the Early Signing Period for football will open up on December 21, 2022 and run through December 23, 2022. The late Signing Day for football will open up on February 1, 2023.
