PROVO, Utah – BYU assistant head coach Ed Lamb is the next head coach at Northern Colorado. Lamb has worked on BYU’s staff for seven seasons in various roles. This year he worked with special teams and safeties. Previously he worked with linebackers.

Lamb, a former BYU linebacker that was part of the 1996 Cotton Bowl team, joined his alma mater after eight seasons at Southern Utah University. Under Lamb’s watch, the T-Birds won a Great West Conference championship in 2010 and produced seven players to the NFL.

His profile fits perfectly for a Northern Colorado program that is looking to rebuild after six consecutive losing seasons. Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey was fired by UNC after two seasons posting a 6-16 record as head coach.

Losing Lamb would be the second full-time coach under Kalani Sitake to leave the staff. The other was defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki, who stepped down from his post after seven seasons leading the BYU defense.

Earlier this week, BYU coach Kalani Sitake said he wants a defensive coordinator hired as soon as possible.

Early in Lamb’s tenure at BYU, he offered defensive back Chris Wilcox, who had no other FBS scholarship offers. Wilcox turned into BYU’s first defensive back selected into the NFL draft since 1993.

At the midway point of the 2022 season, BYU coach Kalani Sitake made assignment changes to his defensive staff. He took over the play-calling duties from Ilaisa Tuiaki, who then focused on the defensive line. Lamb was impacted by the reshuffling as he was exclusive with the special teams unit while Preston Hadley moved from defensive ends to safety, a position he played at BYU.

BYU grad assistant accepts a position at Northern Colorado

KSL Sports confirmed from a source that BYU graduate assistant DJ Williams is going to Northern Colorado to be the cornerback coach. This only ramps up the notion that Lamb is taking the Northern Colorado head coach position.

Williams worked with the defensive backs at BYU and was alongside Jernaro Gilford and Ed Lamb this season. A former star player at Utah State, Williams earns his first full-time college coaching position.
