Tate is a former three-star recruit out of Chandler, Arizona. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker picked BYU out of high school after receiving offers from Arizona, Colorado, Kansas State, Utah, and others.
Romney redshirted during the 2022 season, his first with the BYU football program. He appeared in three games, the season-opener at USF, senior day against Utah Tech, and the regular season finale at Stanford.
Despite not playing in many games, Romney was often a travel participant and dressed for road games in his first year at BYU.
Before arriving at BYU, Romney served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints amid the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020-22. He initially served in Bahia Blanca, Argentina then moved to the San Antonio, Texas, mission for The Church.
Despite not playing much in his one season at BYU, Romney is a noteworthy loss to BYU’s defense as they move forward into the Big 12 Conference. He was viewed as a potential key piece in the linebacker room.
During his senior year of high school ball at Chandler High, Romney racked up 115 tackles, seven sacks, and six pass deflections.
Romney is the fifth BYU football player to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal during the 2023 cycle. Whichever school Romney signs with, he will have four years of eligibility remaining. The NCAA allows one undergrad transfer for immediate eligibility.
