SALT LAKE CITY – Former Real Salt Lake goalkeeper David Ochoa is reportedly on the move again and will join Liga MX side club Atletico San Luis.

Ochoa, 21, was traded from Real Salt Lake to D.C. United on July 29, 2022, following months of uncertainty and turmoil at Real Salt Lake. Ochoa joined D.C. United with only months remaining on his current contract. Real Salt Lake negotiated a deal with D.C. United that stated if D.C. United re-sign Ochoa to a new deal ahead of the 2023 season $300,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) would be sent to Real Salt Lake.
With reports that Ochoa is off to club Atletico San Luis of Liga MX, Real Salt Lake will not receive any GAM money from D.C. United.

Ochoa will join club Atletico San Luis as a free agent. His contract with D.C. United has already expired. As a result, D.C. United will not make any money on the 21-year-old goalkeeper.
In August of 2022, Ochoa publically filed to make a one-time switch from representing the United States to Mexico. Ochoa was born and raised in Oxnard, California, before joining Real Salt Lake as a Homegrown prospect. He was highly regarded as the next great goalkeeper following the mighty career of Nick Rimando at Real Salt Lake.
However, following an impressive 2021 campaign that included 25 starts for Real Salt Lake, Ochoa injured himself in the final preseason game entering the 2022 season. While Ochoa was being treated for an injury, backup goalkeeper Zac MacMath played himself into career-best form and Ochoa’s starting position was no longer warranted. He was required to fight for his starting role again.
The relationship between Ochoa and Real Salt Lake worsened and eventually, Ochoa was sold to D.C. United.
Ochoa’s relationship with Mexico and its fanbase is healthy. The young prodigy is highly thought of as the next great goalkeeper for Mexico. The next chapter in Liga MX will be paramount for Ochoa and his future success.
