Utah Valley Beats Green Bay At Jamaica Classic

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Valley men’s basketball team took down the Green Bay Phoenix to earn a victory at the Jamaica Classic tournament.

The Wolverines and Phoenix played at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Montego Bay, Jamaica on Sunday, November 20.

UVU beat Green Bay, 79-56.

The Wolverines suffered a loss in the opening game of the tourney to Morgan State. By beating Green Bay, the Wolverines will leave the island with a win and their third victory.

Utah Valley battled back and forth with Green Bay through the first portion of the opening half. At the 13:05 mark, the Wolverines connected on a free throw to take a 12-11 lead. UVU never looked back.

The Wolverines built a double-digit lead and went up 33-23 at the halftime break.

During the final 20 minutes of action, Utah Valley stretched its lead to 28 points before capturing the 23-point win.

The Wolverines finished the game shooting 50 percent overall and 38.1 percent on three-pointers. The Phoenix shot 40.4 percent from the field, including 25.0 percent from distance.

The Wolverines won the contest by winning on the glass with a plus-13 rebound advantage. UVU also owned advantages with assists, steals, blocks, and turnovers.

Five Wolverines scored in double figures. Justin Harmon led Utah Valley with 18 points on 7-11 shooting, including 2-4 from three. Harmon added three rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Aziz Bandaogo posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards.Trey Woodbury added 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal. Cameron Alford and Tahj Small combined for 26 points off the bench.

Clarence Cummings III led Green Bay with 16 points.

With the win, the Wolverines improved to a 3-3 record this season. The Phoenix fell to 0-5.

Utah Valley’s next game is on the road against the Boise State Broncos on Saturday, November 26 at 2 p.m. (MDT). ESPN Analytics gives UVU a 17.9 percent chance at winning at ExtraMile Arena.
