Calvin Tyler Jr. Helps Utah State Earn Bowl Eligibility With Career Day

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State running back Calvin Tyler Jr. recorded a career performance to help the Aggies beat the San José State Spartans and earn bowl eligibility.
The Aggies hosted the Spartans at Maverik Stadium on Saturday, November 19.
USU defeated SJSU, 35-31.

Tyler Jr. scored a career single-game high three rushing touchdowns to lead the Aggies to their sixth victory of the season.
After falling behind 6-0 in the opening minutes of the game, the Aggies took their first lead of the game on a Tyler Jr. touchdown run with 59 seconds left in the first quarter.

Utah State wouldn’t trail again until late in the fourth quarter. The Aggies added two more touchdowns in the second quarter, one more from Tyler Jr. and another on special teams.

USU’s Ike Larsen blocked a punt and Jaden Smith recovered the ball before returning it for a score. The special team’s score gave Utah State a 21-6 lead.

The Spartans scored for the second time to cut USU’s lead to a single possession with a little over a minute left in the first half.
San José State opened the third quarter with a field goal to trim the Aggies’ lead to five points. Utah State responded with a touchdown pass from Cooper Legas to Justin McGriff to make it 28-16 Aggies with 5:11 left in the third quarter.

Near the end of the quarter, the Spartans scored another touchdown to make it a one-score game once again.
SJSU took its first lead since its opening score on a touchdown with 6:42 left to play.
At the 2:49 mark, Tyler Jr. ran three yards into the end zone for his third touchdown of the game. Tyler Jr. previously had a single-game high of two rushing scores.

San José State turned the ball over on downs on its next possession and the Aggies were able to run out the clock.
With the win, the Aggies improve their record to 6-5 on the season, including 5-2 in Mountain West Conference action.
Utah State’s next game is on the road against the Boise State Broncos.
