SALT LAKE CITY – The Lehi Pioneers repeated as 5A state champions with a 29-23 win over the Timpview Thunderbirds in triple overtime at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Jackson Brousseau threw for 293 yards and two touchdowns for Lehi. Timpview had 310 passing yards and one touchdown from Helaman Casuga.

First Half

It took three and a half minutes for Timpview to find the end zone but did so on the feet of Micah Beckstead from 10 yards out to give the Thunderbirds a 6-0 lead with 8:34 to go in the opening quarter. They missed their extra point.

Lehi answered with a short touchdown run by Carson Gonzalez and the game was tied at six with 4:35 left in the first quarter after the Pioneers missed their extra point.

Just before halftime, Jackson Brousseau found Carson Gonzalez in the flat, who ran in the 17-yard touchdown. At the break, Lehi held a 13-6 lead.

Second Half

Lehi started the second half with the ball and was able to get a short field goal to take a 16-6 lead early in the third quarter. Timpview answered with a field goal of their own to cut the deficit to 16-9 with 3:38 remaining in the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, Jared Esplin caught an impressive touchdown pass from Helaman Casuga to tie the game at 16.

Overtime

In the first overtime period, Micah Beckstead started things off with a one-yard rushing TD to give the Thunderbirds a 23-16 lead. When it was Lehi’s turn, Jackson Brousseau ran in the touchdown from two yards out to tie the game at 23 and the game went to double overtime.

In the second overtime period, both teams turned the ball over on downs, forcing the third overtime.

After a Lehi interception in triple overtime, Jackson Brousseau threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kolton Tanner to end the game.

It’s the second-ever triple overtime game in the state championship. The other was in 1976 when Millard beat Morgan.
