Utah Tech Takes Down Cal State Northridge For First Win

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Tech men’s basketball team captured its first victory of the 2022-23 season by beating the Cal State Northridge Matadors.
The Trailblazers hosted the Matadors at Burns Arena in Saint George, Utah at Saturday, November 12.
Utah Tech defeated Cal State, 69-63.

During the opening 18 minutes of action, the Matadors and Trailblazers battled back-and-forth with each other. During the final minutes of the first half, the Blazers built an eight-point advantage on the scoreboard. Utah Tech took a 33-25 lead into the halftime break.
After coming out of the locker room, the Trailblazers controlled the final 20 minutes of game time. Utah Tech took its lead and built it up to a 21-point margin. Late in the contest, the Matators fought back and cut Utah Tech’s lead down. The Blazers fought off a comeback attempt despite losing the second half by three points and captured a six-point win.
The Trailblazers finished the night shooting 45.7 percent overall and 29.4 percent from three. Utah Tech limited Cal State to 35.4 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.
Utah Tech had five players score eight points or more in the victory.
Cameron Gooden led the Trailblazers with 17 points on 5-11 shooting, including 1-3 from downtown. He also went 6-9 from thre free throw line. Gooden added eight rebounds and five assists in the Blazers’ win.

Frank Staine poured in 10 points for the Trailblazers.

Dionte Bostick led the Matadors with a game-high 31 points.
With the win, the Blazers improved to a 1-1 record, including 1-0 at home.
Utah Tech’s next game is on the road against the Washington Huskies on Monday, November 14 at 8 p.m. (MDT). ESPN Analytics currently gives Utah Tech a 9.2 percent chance at beating UW at Alaska Airlines Arena. Utah Tech’s next four games are on the road. The Trailblazers’ next game game is against Fullerton on November 26.
