BOISE – Tonight is the final scheduled BYU/Boise State football game. The cause for the pause is BYU’s move to the Big 12 Conference.
With only three non-conference games to work with and one —per Big 12 rules— has to be against a Power Five opponent, BYU’s options to schedule Boise State are limited.
But the two programs have formed a strong relationship over the years. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are working on getting something done in the future.
Bronco Nation…find a way!! Gameday!! 🙏🏼 #1-0

Boise State athletic director Jeremiah Dickey is in his second football season as Boise’s AD tweeted a message to Boise fans hours before the BYU/Boise game on Twitter. He wrote, “Last time we will play BYU in current series (working on future). Have heard this game is just different when played in Boise!”
The BYU series has always meant a lot to Boise State. Both programs played in 2020 during COVID-19 when the Broncos were supposed only to play a Mountain West Conference schedule.
In 2003, when the first games in this series were played, Boise accommodated BYU and ESPN’s requests to play in the middle of each team’s conference seasons. From the beginning, these two universities have had a healthy relationship.
But there are many moving parts in piecing together future non-conference schedules for BYU. BYU AD Tom Holmoe stated earlier this year that they wouldn’t be adding any new game inventory to what they already had built up from their Independent schedules.
Dickey responded to a follower who asked about the “working on future” piece to his original tweet and responded, “Yes. Would love to play them in future. A lot of moving pieces due to CFP expansion, realignment, what’s already scheduled, etc. Isn’t personal or their fault. Just part of what our industry is currently navigating.”
