SALT LAKE CITY – BYU’s first Big 12 Conference football schedule is on the horizon.
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark shared additional details on the 2023 and 2024 schedules for the 14-team conference. The league will welcome BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston on July 1, 2023, and then Texas and Oklahoma are still believed to fulfill their grant of rights through June 30, 2025.
That would give BYU two football seasons in the same league as the Longhorns and Sooners.
Speaking to reporters during the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Media Day tip-off, Yormark confirmed that there will be no divisions in football in 2023 and 2024.
The new Commissioner, who comes to the Big 12 after being with the Brooklyn Nets, NASCAR, and ROC Nation, also gave a timeline for when the 2023 schedule will be released.
Big 12 Football Schedule is coming in early December
“We had a call this morning; we will not have divisions,” said Yormark to reporters. “We’ll announce next year’s schedule in early December, which is pretty much when it has been done previously. And over a two-year period, each of the schools will play each other at least once. Excited about what that schedule will look like when we finally put it out.”
If Texas and Oklahoma commit to staying in the Big 12 through the Grant of Rights, BYU is guaranteed to play the Longhorns and Sooners at least once over the next two years.
Yormark noted that geography will be part of the equation when piecing together the schedule. The Big 12 spans from Morgantown, West Virginia, all the way to Provo, Utah, where BYU is located.
BYU opens up the 2023 football season with Sam Houston State in Provo, then another home game against FCS Southern Utah, before traveling to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for a revenge opportunity against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Then the Cougars will play a nine-game conference schedule in the Big 12.
BYU hasn’t been in a conference since 2010, when they were a member of the Mountain West Conference. Since 2011, BYU has competed as an FBS Independent program. The 2022 season marks BYU’s last year in football Independence.
