SALT LAKE CITY- Utah needed a victory and they needed it bad to keep their Pac-12 Championship hopes alive, and they got it Saturday night against the Trojans, 43-42. The Utes displayed “unwavering belief” in their win over USC in the comfort of Rice-Eccles Stadium. There were several times last night that Utah’s backs were against the wall, but it ultimately never seemed to matter.

Both quarterback Cam Rising, and head coach Kyle Whittingham talked after the game about how the team stuck together and gutted out the win they needed.
An ‘Unwavering Belief’
Utah beat the Trojans on a 2-point conversion with just 48 seconds left in the game. Rising used his legs in both the touchdown to get the Utes within one point of USC, and in the go-ahead conversion. When asked about pulling the game out, Rising simply said it was due to the “unwavering belief” the team has in itself and a strong desire to honor their fallen teammates from last season.
“We had unwavering belief,” Rising said. “Guys didn’t stop believing and we all just have a common goal that we want to go out here- execute and just be clean. Do everything we can because having Ty and Aaron on your helmet makes it that much easier to go, dig deep and do everything you can to try and get the dub.”

Whittingham agreed with his quarterback, noting his team showed incredible fortitude and perseverance to get the win over a very good USC team.
“The toughness, and guts, and grit, and determination of our football team to hang in there- it’s just a joy to coach those guys,” Whittingham said. “I just love coaching this team and to be associated with them.”
The Utes will get a well-deserved break next week as they settle into their BYE. After that, Utah will be on the road to the Palouse on a Thursday to take on a Washington State game that has given teams everything they have got in 2022.
