SALT LAKE CITY – Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich announced that former Utah safety Julian Blackmon suffered an ankle sprain against the Kansas City Chiefs and his recovery will be monitored ahead of Week 4.
On Monday, September 26, Reich shared that Blackmon suffered an ankle sprain, which cause him to leave the game early, a day earlier.
“Julian had an ankle sprain. We’ll continue to evaluate that as the week goes on,” the Colts coach said of Blackmon’s injury. As is typically the case with these types of injuries, Blackmon could return in Week 4 or be out of the lineup for multiple weeks depending on the severity of the sprain.

After receiving attention from Colts personnel, Blackmon attempted to warm up his recently taped ankle. Instead of going back into the game, the safety went to the locker room prior to the end of the first half.
Before leaving the game, Blackmon had one tackle. Indianapolis owned a 10-6 lead at the time of Blackmon’s injury. The Chiefs went on to take a 14-10 lead before halftime.
Indianapolis came back in the final minute of the game to win, 20-17, for its first win of the season. With the victory, the Colts improved to a 1-1-1 record.
This season, Blackmon had recorded three tackles and one pass breakup in three games.
Last season, he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury early in the year and only played in six games in 2021. Blackmon also suffered an ACL injury in his final college game at Utah.
During his NFL career, the safety has posted 79 total tackles, 64 solo tackles, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, and eight pass breakups in 24 games.
Indianapolis’ next game is at home against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, October 2 at 11 a.m. (MDT) on FOX.
