SALT LAKE CITY- One of the highlights from last Saturday’s game against Southern Utah was safety RJ Hubert’s pick six. While having your defense snag a pass and take it in the opposite direction for a score is always fun, the play had added meaning helping to extend a streak that goes back to 2003. For those counting on their fingers and toes at home, that’s 19 straight seasons the Utes have had a pick six which leads the country.

Last Season’s Pick Six
In 2021 the Utes recorded three pick sixes. Senior linebacker Devin Lloyd accounted for two of the day-ruiners. One against Stanford and the other in the Pac-12 Championship Game against Oregon. Clark Phillips III accounted for the third against Washington State, ironically the same game he saved the streak back in 2020.
The Season Is Still Young
Considering Utah’s streak has been maintained for another year at the beginning of the season, it doesn’t feel hard to imagine there could be other pick sixes in their future. Utah’s defensive backfield easily boasts the most experience, with Hubert, Phillips III, Cole Bishop, and JaTravis Broughton all having been with the program a season if not longer, making it reasonable to expect they may be the most responsible for big plays in 2022.
RJ Hubert joins great company with his effort this past Saturday. Along with his current teammate Phillips III, and former teammate Lloyd, guys like Francis Bernard, Eric Weddle, Julian Blackmon, and Deshawn Richard have all given Ute fans buzz-worthy pick six performances throughout the streak’s history.
