EUGENE, Ore. – Saturday’s BYU/Oregon matchup is among the best on the week three college football slate. Two Top 25 teams seeking a huge win. But the battle on the gridiron might need to take a back seat to the matchup on the Autzen Stadium sidelines.

That matchup features the mascots from each school.
The Oregon Duck and Cosmo from BYU.
Both mascots have a die-hard following of fans that spans worldwide. Their loyal fan bases and entertaining antics make them two of the top mascots in all sports.
BYU/Oregon Showdown: Mascot Style
We asked BYU football players about this mascot matchup and it inspired some responses.

“Cosmo’s the best mascot in the nation. And I don’t want to hear nothing about that, alright? That is doctrine right there, Cosmo’s the boy.” said BYU linebacker Ben Bywater to KSL Sports.
On the Oregon side, the University of Oregon’s social media tweet responded to a tweet asking which mascot is better, The Duck or Cosmo? They simply said, “Seriously???”

Let’s break down some of the accomplishments of these iconic mascots.
The Oregon Duck
- First seen: 1940
- Got into a fight with Houston mascot, Shasta
- Celebrity guest picker on College Gameday
- Featured mascot in a “This is SportsCenter” commercial
- Dance videos
- Skydived into College Gameday
- Appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
- Based on the Disney character, Donald Duck
- Funny viral moments
BYU mascot Cosmo
- First seen: 1953
- 2020 National Champion mascot
- ESPN referred to Cosmo as “The Most Athletic Mascot in America”
- Viral dance with BYU’s Cougarettes to “Rolex”
- Slam Dunks from the three-point line
- World record for consecutive windmills
- Parachuted into LaVell Edwards Stadium
- Human bowling ball stunt
- Handstand down the Richards Building stairs
The tale of the tape doesn’t lie. Both of these mascots are pretty awesome.
Five years ago, these star mascots crossed paths. The lone highlight of BYU’s abysmal 4-9 football season in 2017, was Cosmo dancing to Ayo & Teo’s “Rolex” with the Cougarettes. Cosmo’s moves from the dance immediately went viral.
The Duck put together his own dance moves with the Oregon cheer squad to Kendrick Lamar.

Because of their impressive dance moves, ESPN asked both mascots to participate in a dance-off at the College Football Awards show. If we don’t get something like this on Saturday, well, society will be hurting, is all I can say.
We all need another mascot showdown between Cosmo and The Duck. It’s a must.
