PROVO – BYU welcomed the Big 12 Conference to Provo for a big matchup and left a strong impression with a thrilling 26-20 victory over Baylor. In a matchup of Top 25 teams, BYU battled the Bears in the trenches and earned redemption over last year’s disappointing loss in Waco. Jaren Hall led the Cougars to the win in overtime, coming up clutch in the fourth quarter and helping BYU survive in extra time.

BYU Defeats Baylor In Double Overtime
In the absence of top receivers Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney, it was freshman Chase Roberts who stepped up big. Roberts was Hall’s favorite target on the night, with Roberts pulling in eight receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown. He also had a passing touchdown to Jaren Hall on a trick play in the third quarter. Hall was clutch for the Cougars, completing 23/39 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown, alongside his 22-yard touchdown reception.
The BYU defense came to play, stifling the Bears offense. After being manhandled a year ago, the Cougars battled at the line of scrimmage and held Baylor to just 289 yards of offense and just 137 passing yards. Baylor pounded the rock consistently, rushing the ball 52 times but averaging just 2.9 yards on the ground.

Each team’s kickers missed big kicks, including Jake Oldroyd who had a game-winner opportunity with nine seconds left. The teams also combined for 23 penalties in the game. Even though it was ugly at times, BYU was resilient and took advantage of every opportunity. It was an impressive win in what will go down as one of the biggest wins of the independence era and sets the stage for a future of fun matchups in the Big 12 conference.
It was a back and forth battle all night in front of a sellout crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium. In their season home opener, the Cougars didn’t disappoint in giving their fans an entertaining evening. The crowd helped, forcing multiple false starts and making things difficult for the Bears. The win marks BYU’s first win over a Top 10 ranked opponent at home since they defeated no. 1 Miami during the 1990 season.

This game will be won in the trenches, moreso than most games. The Bears & Cougars are battling in there.

SACK! Lorenzo Fauatea.
He’s an early candidate for most improved player in the program. A long road to getting back to full health. An impact player along #BYU‘s defensive line.#BUvsBYU #BYUFootball

1.4 YPC for #BYU on 8 carries in the first quarter. Not good.
Baylor has 1.9 yards per carry on 8 touches. Very good for the Cougar defense.
I’d give a slight edge to the Bears in the battle at the line of scrimmage through 1Q. #BYUFootball #BUvsBYU

It’s a loss for #BYU to not have Nacua or Romney, but what an opportunity for Chase Roberts. Rising to the occasion. He’s the third best receiver for #BYU. #BYUFootball #BUvsBYU

Toe-tap FTW. I said pregame to @AlexKirryKSL on The @ZoneSportsNet that Chase Roberts could have his coming out party tonight. Alas he goes and gets that one. What a TD for BYU #BYUfootball #BYU

Baylor’s opening drive of the second half results in a 9-play, 77-yard drive.#BYU‘s defense wasn’t able to create any pressure on that drive, and Baylor moved down the field with ease.#BUvsBYU #BYUFootball
