DENVER, CO - SEPTEMBER 9: C.J. Cron #25 of the Colorado Rockies hits a solo home run in the fourth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Coors Field on September 9, 2022 in Denver, Colorado.

SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah first baseman C.J. Cron continued his career year with a titanic blast that landed more than 500 feet from home plate.

Cron’s Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-10 at Coors Field in Denver, CO on Friday, September 9.

With the Rockies leading 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cron turned on an inside fastball, launching it deep into the Colorado night, eventually settling down beyond the left field concourse.

According to Baseball Savant, the ball left Cron’s bat at a blistering 110 miles per hour and traveled 504 feet, making it the longest MLB home run this season.

Cron has 27 home runs and 92 runs batted in while hitting .266. He was named as a National League all-star for the first time in his career earlier this season. His 27 home runs are three shy of his career high, set back in 2018 with Tampa Bay.

About C.J. Cron

Now 32 years old, Cron made his impression on the Utes from 2009-2011 playing under Bill Kinneberg.

During his time as a Ute, Cron set a Utah career record batting average at .396. The first baseman was also a two-time first-team All-American in 2010 and 2011 while earning Freshman All-American in 2009. Cron was a two-time NCBWA District VIII Player of the Year and a two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year while also earning MWC Freshman of the Year in 2009.

Cron set the tone for his entire Utah career in 2009 as a freshman when he became the only player that year to get three hits in a game against Stephen Strasburg who would go on to be a number 1 draft pick in the MLB.

In 2011, Cron was a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and a two-time Dick Hower Trophy semifinalist. Cron was selected 17th overall in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He would be Utah’s first-ever first round draft pick.

Since joining the league in 2014, Cron has played in 960 career games. In his ninth season, Cron has 173 home runs and 557 runs batted in.
