TAMPA, FL – BYU wide receiver Gunner Romney will not play in the season opener against USF.
At the beginning of fall camp, Romney said he was “healthier than ever.” However, days after that comment to KSL Sports, Romney suffered an injury in fall camp that has since limited his availability.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake said in the pregame show on the BYU Sports Network, heard on KSL NewsRadio that they were “hoping to the end” for the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Romney to play on Saturday. But he is now sidelined.

Romney had 34 receptions for 594 yards last season and is one of the top receivers in the program. Coming into the year, Romney, who is in his fifth season at BYU after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility given due to the COVID year in 2020, is on the Senior Bowl watch list. The Senior Bowl watch list is recognition for potential NFL draft prospects.
Romney has dealt with injuries throughout his BYU career. Early on at BYU, he was dealing with a hamstring injury. Then last year, in the season opener against Arizona, Romney was rolled up while blocking downfield, which caused him to leave the game on crutches.
Romney still played in 10 games last season despite the injuries last year.
Earlier this week, during an interview on KSL Sports Zone, Romney said his injury that has not been disclosed would be a “game-by-game” evaluation with team trainers and doctors.
In replace of Romney, BYU will turn to Puka Nacua, Keanu Hill, Brayden Cosper, and Chase Roberts as some of the top receivers.
