A total of eight captains were tabbed to earn a captain “C” on their uniform for when BYU takes on USF this Saturday in Tampa.
The eight captains include four from the offensive side of the ball and four on defense. Fifth-year quarterback Jaren Hall leads the group as he returns to the post of captain for the second consecutive season.
Along with Hall on offense, offensive tackle Blake Freeland, offensive lineman Clark Barrington, and wide receiver Puka Nacua earned captain nods.
Flipping over to the defensive, a pair of captains from last year return and are back from injuries in linebackers Keenan Pili and Payton Wilgar. Wilgar said on Monday that he is better than ever with the shoulder where he had surgery. While Pili is returning from an ACL injury he suffered last year against Arizona State.
The other two defensive players to earn the captain “C” are first-time captains in cornerback Kaleb Hayes and defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea.
“It’s an honor for these young men to be recognized by their teammates to lead our team,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said. “We are fortunate to have a lot of quality young men in our program who bring unique leadership experiences to the team.”
BYU football also named assistant co-captains
BYU also named assistant co-captains for the season. Those players included wide receiver Gunner Romney, tight end Dallin Holker, center Connor Pay, and running backs Chris Brooks and Lopini Katoa.
On defense, linebacker Ben Bywater, defensive end Tyler Batty, cornerback D’Angelo Mandell, and safety Malik Moore will have an assistant “A” on their uniforms. Then on special teams, punter Ryan Rehkow got a co-captain nod.
BYU football opens up the 2022 season against the USF Bulls on Saturday, September 3, in Tampa, Florida.
