PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s volleyball had a record-setting night at the Smith Fieldhouse.
In No. 10 BYU’s match against Duke on Friday night, a record-setting 5,507 fans packed into the fieldhouse. That attendance is the new Smith Fieldhouse record for a women’s volleyball match.
What’s even more impressive about the record attendance is that the fieldhouse has a capacity of 5,000 seats. The previous high before Friday night was 5,472 for a match against Utah in 2018.

The record crowd was rewarded with a victory as BYU defeated the Blue Devils 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19).
It was the second win of the day for BYU, as earlier in the afternoon, they swept Rider to open the doTerra BYU Classic.
BYU’s attendance record is even more impressive because school isn’t in session yet. The fall semester begins on Monday, but a sizable wave of freshmen has arrived.

So the new freshmen class got their first taste of BYU athletics on campus. BYU students filled the entire upper deck of the Smith Fieldhouse wearing black t-shirts for the “blackout” to coincide with the BYU team wearing black uniforms.
Along with the freshmen class, members of the BYU men’s and women’s basketball teams were also in attendance to support Heather Olmstead’s volleyball squad.
BYU Women’s Volleyball will be back at the Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday night against the Washington State Cougars at 7 p.m.
