Two years ago, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, BYU fans lifted Cosmo from not on the bracket to a mascot National Championship. All through a Twitter poll.
Fox Sports also had a bracket to identify the best college basketball fan base. BYU nearly won that, too, thanks to help from Utah Senator and BYU alum Mitt Romney. but they came up short against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the championship round.
In 2014, the NCAA put out a contest called “6th fan” that would award an institution $100,000 for a general scholarship fund. BYU won that too.
Potential paths for BYU & Utah
After six hours of voting, BYU-Oklahoma is the most voted on first-round matchup with nearly 20,000 votes. The polls run until August 11.
The Utah-North Carolina matchup has totaled close to 13,000 votes. If Utah gets by the Tar Heels, they will face the winner of Georgia-UTSA.
For BYU, if they pull off the upset against the Sooners, they will face the Kentucky-Washington winner.
