SALT LAKE CITY- Utah running back Tavion Thomas and Utah State running back Calvin Tyler Jr. were named to the Doak Walker Watch List early Wednesday morning. This is the second watch list for Thomas who was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List earlier in the week and the first for Tyler Jr.

The Doak Walker Watch List consists of 72 running back hopefuls who will be vying to be named the top back of 2022. Ten semifinalists will be named in November with three finalists being named later in the month. The Doak Walker Award is named after SMU’s three-time All-American.

The recipient of the Doak Walker Award will be determined by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee. The winner will be announced live on December 8 at the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.

About Doak Walker Hopefuls Tavion Thomas and Calvin Tyler Jr.

Thomas wowed in 2021 for the Utes despite a slow start to his career. Once he got his wheels under him, Thomas racked up 204 carries for 1,108 yards (5.4 ypc) and 21 touchdowns helping the Utes to their first-ever Pac-12 title and Rose Bowl appearance. His 21 touchdowns broke the Utah single-season record while putting Thomas solidly at third in the country in touchdowns amassed in 2021. Thomas also finished the year with five 100-yard games and scored at least one touchdown in his final nine games of the season. Thomas’ efforts with the Utes earned him All-Pac-12 first-team honors.

Utah State’s Tyler Jr. was a big part of the Aggie’s run to their first-ever Mountain West Conference title. In 2021, Tyler Jr. rushed for 884 yards and seven touchdowns on 196 carries all of which were team bests. Tyler Jr. also had four 100-yard rushing games that season while proving deadly in the passing game too. Tyler Jr. caught 11 passes for 50 yards, finishing the year with 934 all-purpose yards.
