“I’m The Meanest On The Field”
Phillips III has been blowing up in 2022 projections after his stellar performance in Utah’s first Rose Bowl appearance this past January. Going against one of the most prolific offenses in all of college football led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, Phillips III accounted for five tackles, a pass breakup, one forced fumble and one interception.
The 2021 season overall was a good one for Phillips III after showing a ton of promise in a shortened 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Phillips III finished the year with 63 total tackles, one tackle for a loss, two forced fumbles, 13 pass breakups and two-interceptions that firmly planted him as one of the nation’s best cornerbacks.
Owens knowing a few things about great football players himself, asked Phillips III in the social media clip released if he knew about any of the other great cornerbacks in his class and what sets him apart from them. Phillips III’s response was simple, “I’m the meanest on the field”.
Phillips III and Owens
In a fantasy world, it would be fun to pit Phillips III and Owens against each other in an epic cornerback versus wide receiver battle. Both men possess a competitive spirit that clearly has put them at the top of their games. It’s always interesting to think about how a new-school guy would compete with one of the all-time-greats while on the way to possibly being an all-time-great themselves.
Instead, we’ll just have to settle for interviews that clearly demonstrate a respect for each other. It’s pretty incredible how much admiration Phillips III has gained in such a short amount of time along with Utah. It’s even crazier to think about the opportunities that potentially lie ahead for both in 2022.
