SALT LAKE CITY- It’s been a great year to be former Utah baseball star C.J. Cron. After giving a ‘significant gift’ to the Utah baseball earlier in the year, the talented first baseman for the Colorado Rockies was named an MLB All-Star over the weekend. With the recognition from the league, Cron becomes the first Ute to earn such honors.

Cron In The MLB

Currently in his ninth season with the MLB, Cron has played in 84 games, hitting .295 with a Rockies team-best 20 home runs, and .901 OPS. Cron has also recorded 66 RBI, which as of July 10 is tied for second most in the MLB and just four behind Pete Alonso with the New York Metts.

Since Cron joined the league in 2014, he has been good for 912 games with a current career batting average of .265, 166 homers and 531 RBI.

The MLB All-Star game will be played at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, July 19. You can watch Cron in the 92nd MLB All-Star at 5:30 MT on Fox.

At Utah

Now 32 years old, Cron made his impression on the Utes from 2009-2011 playing under Bill Kinneberg. During his time as a Ute, Cron set a Utah career record batting average at .396. Cron was also a two-time first-team All-American in 2010 and 2011 while earning Freshman All-American in 2009. Cron was a two-time NCBWA District VIII Player of the Year and a two-time Mountain WEst Conference Player of the Year while also earning MWC Freshman of the Year in 2009.

Cron set the tone for his entire Utah career in 2009 as a freshman when he became the only player that year to get three hits in a game against Stephen Strasburg who would go on to be a number 1 draft pick in the MLB.

In 2011, Cron was a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist and a two-time Dick Hower Trophy semifinalist. Cron was selected 17th overall in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He would be Utah’s first-ever first round draft pick.
