Reports: USU Safety Monté McGary Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah State safety Monté McGary entered the NCAA’s Transfer Portal after one season with the Aggies, according to multiple reports.
247Sports was the first to report McGary’s entrance into the portal on Tuesday, June 21.
The 2021 season was the safety’s first year with the USU football program.
McGary joined the Aggies ahead of last season after transferring from Troy. He graduated from Troy in 2020 and is listed as a graduate student for the 2022 season.

McGary is a native of North Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to his college career, McGary was a standout player at Omaha South High School. During his two seasons at Omaha South, McGary recorded 61 catches for 1,341 yards and 12 touchdowns as a receiver. He added 27 tackles and an interception. McGary also played basketball and competed in track & field.
After high school, McGary attended South Dakota State and played cornerback. He also participated in special teams. In 2018, McGary had 16 tackles and one pass breakup in 16 games.
Following his time with the Jackrabbits, McGary played at Iowa Western Community College and recorded 24 tackles, one fumble recovery, and a pass breakup.
McGary transferred to Troy for the 2019 season but was unable to play due to an injury. Then the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted his 2020 season at Troy.

Last season at Utah State, McGary posted 24 total tackles, 13 solo tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and an interception. He appeared in 14 contests, including three starts.
McGary helped the Aggies to an 11-3 record, including 6-2 in Mountain West Conference games. The safety also helped USU capture its first-ever Mountain West title and a win over Oregon State in the L.A. Bowl. McGary recorded a pass breakup during Utah State’s 46-13 victory over San Diego State in the Mountain West championship game.
