SALT LAKE CITY – The countdown for Hans & Scotty’s 60 in 60 is on. Coming in at #41 is BYU’s D’Angelo Mandell (DB).

Throughout the summer Hans & Scotty are counting down the top 60 college football players in the state of Utah as voted on by the media (and a fan ballot).

“He has a lot of size and length with tons of speed that can lock down on an island, can handle a slot receiver as well as the big target receivers and big tight ends,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said of his defensive back.

BYU’s D’Angelo Mandell

Mandell is a native of San Diego, California.

Prior to his college career, the defensive back was a standout player at Del Norte High School, where he played both on offense and defense. As a senior at Del Norte, Mandell recorded 44 tackles and an interception. He also had 23 catches for 323 yards and a touchdown. During his high school career, he was a three-time All-CIF selection, four-time first-team all-league selection, and three-time first-team North County selection. In addition to being recruited by the Cougars, Mandell was also pursued by USC, Washington, Washington State, and Vanderbilt.

Mandell has played for the Cougars since 2017.

Mandell first saw action during his second season at BYU in 2018, when he posted nine total tackles and six solo tackles in 13 games.

In 2019, Mandell had 21 total tackles, 17 solo tackles, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hurry in 13 contests played.

His 2020 season was limited to only eight games played. During that stretch, Mandell had six total tackles, two solo tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and a pass breakup.

Last season, Mandell played in 13 games and recorded 36 total tackles, 25 solo tackles, one tackle for loss, and four pass breakups.

Over the past two seasons, he helped the Cougars to a combined record of 21-4, including an 11-1 record in 2020.

Mandell and the Cougars open their 2022 schedule on the road against the USF Bulls on September 3.
