Instant Replay: Former BYU DL Snags Big Catch During USFL Game
SALT LAKE CITY – Former BYU defensive lineman Corbin Kaufusi came off the line of scrimmage for a big catch during the USFL game between the Tampa Bay Bandits and New Jersey Generals.
The Bandits hosted the Generals at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday, May 28.
With 1:28 left in the first half, Kaufusi, now an offensive lineman who played football and basketball at BYU, lined up as an eligible receiver instead of a blocker.
The offensive lineman ran a solid route and snagged a pass that sailed over the heads of a couple of New Jersey defenders.
Kaufusi’s grab was a 32-yard gain down to the Generals’ 16-yard line.
Tampa Bay finished the drive with a field goal to cut New Jersey’s lead to 7-3.
The Bandits went on to fall to the Generals, 20-13.
The former BYU standout finished the game with one catch for 32 yards on one target.
After the game, Kaufusi spoke about the play and how he patiently waited for it to be called this season.
“I’ve been waiting weeks, I finally got to do it this week,” the lineman said.
With the loss, the Bandits fell to a 3-4 record this season.
Prior to his time in professional football, Kaufusi played on the BYU football team from 2016-18.
After his college career, Kaufusi spent time in the NFL as a member of the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers.
Tampa Bay’s next game is against the Houston Gamblers on Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m. (MDT). The game will be streamed on Peacock.
