RSL Comes Back Against CF Montréal For Second Road Win Of 2022

May 22, 2022, 3:59 PM | Updated: 4:57 pm

SALT LAKE CITY – Real Salt Lake collected its second road victory of the 2022 season with a second half comeback against CF Montréal.

CF Montréal hosted Real Salt Lake at Stade Saputo in Montréal, Quebec, Canada on Sunday, May 22.

After trailing by a goal at halftime, RSL came back in the second half to beat Montréal, 2-1.

The victory earned Real Salt Lake three points on the road for only the second time this season. It was also the club’s first-ever win at Montréal.

Before beating Montréal, RSL’s only road win of the year came against the New England Revolution in March.

First 45 Minutes

Things started poorly for RSL as Djordje Mihailovic found the back of the net during the opening minute of action.

Mihailovic scored less than 45 seconds into the match to give Montréal an early 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

Real Salt Lake was able to shake off the early goal and made progress throughout the rest of the half. Despite a couple of solid shots by Bobby Wood, RSL was unable to level the match before halftime.

At the break, CF Montréal owned a 1-0 lead.

During the opening 45 minutes of play, RSL controlled possession for 54 percent of the half and outshot Montréal 5-2. Both clubs had one shot on frame.

Real Salt Lake had four corners to two by Montréal.

Second Half Comeback

Like the club’s last match, Real Salt Lake found itself down a goal at halftime and came out of the locker room attacking early in the second half.

During the 54th minute, Pablo Ruiz sent the ball into the box on a corner kick from the far side of the field. Glad connected his head onto the ball and sent it sailing into the back of the goal.

Glad’s goal leveled the score a 1-1.

It was the RSL defender’s second goal of the 2022 campaign.

12 minutes after Glad’s goal, Real Salt Lake made the most of another offensive opportunity.

In the 66th minute, Maikel Chang fed the ball ahead to a sprinting Sergio Córdova, who struck the ball at a sharp angle and buried the ball into the net at the near post.

Córdova’s goal put RSL in front, 2-1.

It was Córdova’s second goal of the season.

Real Salt Lake held on through the remainder of the half for the win and three points.

RSL finished the match having held possession for only 44 percent of the time. However, Real Salt Lake ended up with 13 shots compared to Montréal’s eight.

With the result, RSL moved to a record of 6-4-3 this season.

Real Salt Lake’s next match is at home against Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on the KSL Sports app and KSLSports.com.
