SALT LAKE CITY – The offseason is in full swing for our local basketball and football teams in the state of Utah but the releases at the movie theater are heating up in time for summer.

Here are our picks for the must-see movies coming out this summer:

Summer Movie Guide

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The Marvel superhero film is a sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange. It is the 28th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen.

  • Opening Date: May 6

Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers

The movie is based on the cartoon series Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. The cast includes John Mulaney, Andy Samberg, Will Arnett, Eric Banam Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, and KiKi Layne.

  • Opening Date: May 20

Downton Abbey: A New Era

A New Era is a sequel to 2019’s Downton Abbey. Much of the first film’s cast returned for the sequel.

  • Opening Date: May 20

The Bob’s Burgers Movie

The movie is based on the television series Bob’s Burgers. The film is an animated comedy that includes the original voices from the TV series.

  • Opening Date: May 27

Top Gun: Maverick

The sequel to Top Gun will arrive on the big screen more than 35 years after Tom Cruise debuted the blockbuster. Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated to be released in 2019 but was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Opening Date: May 27

Jurassic World Dominion

The film starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard is the third movie in the Jurassic World series and the sixth movie in the Jurassic Park franchise. It is the final film in the Jurassic World triology.

  • Opening Date: June 10

Lightyear

The Toy Story spin-off is the origin story of Buzz Lightyear. The main character is voiced by Chris Evans.

  • Opening Date: June 17

Elvis

The film details the life of the late rock ‘n roll star Elvis Presley. Elvis stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.

  • Opening Date: June 24

Minions: The Rise of Gru 

The animated movie is the fifth production in the Despicable Me series. The Rise of Gru is also the sequel to Despicable Me prequel, Minions.

  • Opening Date: July 1

Thor: Love and Thunder

Love and Thunder is the fourth Thor movie and will be the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Hemsworth stars as Thor.

  • Opening Date: July 8

DC League of Super-Pets

The upcoming animation is a comedy combining superheroes and pets. The voices in the movie include Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, Thomas Middleditch, Ben Schwartz, and Keanu Reeves.

  • Opening Date: July 29
