BYU Women’s Rugby Repeats As National Champions

SALT LAKE CITY – The BYU Cougars women’s rugby team defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies to win a second consecutive national championship.
The title game took place at Aveva Stadium in Houston, Texas on Saturday, April 30.
BYU defeated Virginia Tech, 80-7.
It was the Cougars’ second straight College Rugby Association of America title.

Like some other sports played by BYU student-athletes, the women’s rugby team isn’t a sanctioned sport by Brigham Young University.
BYU won the first of its two straight championships in 2019. In each of the last two years, the coronavirus pandemic prevented the Cougars from defending their title.

On Saturday, BYU blew out Virginia Tech in the long-awaited chance to defend its title.
Kate Santus was the only player to score for the Hokies.
The Cougars are coached by Tom Waqa.
