SALT LAKE CITY – The Atlanta Falcons drafted BYU running back Tyler Allgeier in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Falcons fans looking for info on a possible new running back have come to the right spot.
Here are five things to know about BYU’s former star ball carrier.
Former Walk-On
Tyler Allgeier arrived at BYU as a preferred walk-on from Kaiser High School in Fontana, California. Allgeier was pursued by former BYU running back coach AJ Steward (now at Oregon State).

During Allgeier’s first fall camp, he saw reps at both running back and in the slot at the wide receiver. After Allgeier’s first fall camp at BYU, Steward said the running back had “endless potential” in his football career.
Allgeier chose BYU out of high school because he liked the school and the opportunities that it provided to him.
Tyler Allgeier Switched To Linebacker in 2019
After his redshirt season at BYU, Allgeier switched to the defensive side at linebacker in 2019. The move was driven by the arrival of Ty’Son Williams (Baltimore Ravens RB), transferring from South Carolina.

Allgeier proved to be a solid linebacker, and in the win against undefeated and No. 14 Boise State, Allgeier led the team in tackles with nine. He finished the 2019 season with 26 tackles before switching to running back again due to a wave of injuries. Allgeier finished with 119 rushing yards in 2019.
Star Backfield with Zach Wilson
No one knew if the 2020 football season was going to be played or not due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, as an independent, BYU pushed forward to cobble up any schedule. It proved to be an opportunity to showcase the star power of Allgeier at running back and his star QB Zach Wilson (New York Jets).
#BYU's Tyler Allgeier on whether he's an inside or outside running back: "I've been working on my speed a lot during the offseason. I'll say I'm for sure an inside runner but I've been working on my speed to do both."#BYUFootball @kslsports

Favorite NFL Player & Team Growing Up
Tyler Allgeier has said that his favorite NFL player growing up as a kid was former great Marshawn Lynch. In addition, Allgeier said he enjoyed studying Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb during his college days at BYU.

As a kid and with a close relationship with his grandpa, Allgeier grew up fans of the Indianapolis Colts.
“Because of my grandpa, he was a Colts fan. So you know, he’d be like, ‘Hey T-Bone, who’s going to win? The Colts or whoever?’ And I was like, ‘Uh man, I’ll give it to the Colts.’ Yeah, I’ll say growing up, the Colts for sure,” said Allgeier.
