Former Utah State Aggie Joins BYU Football As Grad Assistant

PROVO, Utah – BYU football has added a recent Utah State player to its coaching staff.
Former Utah State cornerback standout DJ Williams joins BYU’s staff as a graduate assistant on the defensive side. Williams, a former Honorable Mention All-Mountain West performer for the Aggies, is the fourth grad assistant. The NCAA limits programs to four graduate assistant hires each season.
To announce his new position at Utah State’s Wagon Wheel rival, BYU, Williams changed his profile picture to a Nike BYU Football logo.

Williams joins former BYU fullback/tight end Kyle Griffitts, as a defensive GA. Griffitts gave a warm BYU welcome on social media.
“Yessuh!!! Byu nation!! Y’all go give BYUs new Graduate Assistant coach some love!! My guy bout to kill it,” wrote Griffitts.
BYU brings back grad assistants Jordan Howard and Spencer Patterson on the offensive side.
“Thank you God for the new opportunity, it’s a blessing. New chapter,” Williams wrote on Instagram Stories about joining BYU’s staff.

Williams hails from Smyrna, Tennessee. Out of high school, he signed with the in-state Chattanooga Mocs at the FCS level. After two years with the Mocs, Williams transferred to junior college ball at Independence Community College.
Williams was a starting cornerback for the 2017 Indy team documented in the Netflix series “Last Chance U.” He emerged as a Top-100 JUCO prospect by 247Sports after a year at Indy. Williams then signed with the Aggies and started 26 games for Utah State.

After his playing career concluded at Utah State, Williams posted some impressive Pro Day numbers running a 4.53 40-yard dash, 4.12-second shuttle run, 6.80 3-Cone, and had a vertical jump of 37 inches.
Williams will work with the BYU defensive backs led by cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford and assistant head coach Ed Lamb, who leads the safeties. Both coaches have been with the BYU football program since 2016.
