SALT LAKE CITY – Tony Finau has made the cut at the Valero Texas Open and currently sits five shots off the pace with two rounds to play.
Finally, Finau snaps a run of poor form with a made cut just one week before the start of The Masters. Entering the Valero Texas Open, Finau had only made one cut in his previous four attempts and this season Finau has only managed to finish in the top 20 on one occasion.
Finau shot a two-under-par round to get his tournament going on Thursday before adding a one-under-round score of 71 today. His opening round was bogey-free, with the two birdies falling on the back-nine. His second round was more adventurous as his only two bogeys both came on par 5’s, surprisingly. An opening hole birdie, followed by birdies on 15 and 17 got Finau back into contention ahead of the weekend.

The Valero Texas Open is being played at TPC San Antonio where the conditions are difficult. The greens are incredibly firm, making life challenging for players to go pin-seeking. Rather, players are being forced to utilize the run-out on their approach shots if they intend on sticking their irons and wedges close.
Finau was recently featured on the front page of Golf.com’s April edition of its magazine where he details and shares information on how he strikes his irons so consistently. Within the story, Finau and his swing coach Boyd Summerhays detail the importance of Finau’s swing mechanics. This season, Finau has been very consistent and impressive with his irons and wedges as he has hit 73% of greens in regulation.
The issue Finau has been facing is off the tee where he has only managed to hit 52% of fairways while he is also struggling on and around the greens with his putter.
Nevertheless, the made cut at the Valero will hopefully help Finau’s morale ahead of the biggest tournament of the year next week. The Masters has always been a venue in which Finau has played well, he has finished in a tie for 10 or better in three of the four appearances at Augusta National. He has never missed the cut.
Tee times and pairings ahead of this weekend are yet to be announced. This story will be updated as soon as that information becomes available.
