This is the second consecutive year that CBS Sports, a television partner with the WCC, has selected BYU vs. LMU for its analytics and stats-focused broadcast. Tonight’s game is one of two “Beyond the Box Score” telecasts on CBS Sports Network. The other was on February 9 when George Mason defeated Richmond.
John Hollinger created (PER)
Hollinger is the creator of the Player Efficiency Rating (PER) from his days at ESPN.com. A metric that, according to Hollinger, “sums up all a player’s positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative accomplishments and returns a per-minute rating of a player’s performance.

Since Mark Pope took over as BYU’s head coach in 2019, BYU has embraced analytics to find advantages in their program. From ShotTracker, HD Intelligence, ShotQuality, and other analytical mediums, BYU’s staff loves digging into the numbers to gain an edge.

Tonight is an important game for BYU as they look to remain in the mix for an at-large bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament. BYU is currently at 19-9 overall, 7-6 in WCC play. Two weeks ago, BYU was down by 17 points to LMU before coming back to defeat the Lions in overtime and end a four-game losing streak.
LMU comes into the game with a 9-16 overall record and is currently on a nine-game losing streak.
