Old Hammer Overtime: Dixie State Defeats Utah Valley For Rivalry Win

SALT LAKE CITY – The Dixie State men’s basketball team took down the Utah Valley Wolverines in an overtime thriller for an Old Hammer rivalry victory.
The Trailblazers hosted the Wolverines at Burns Arena on Saturday, February 19.
Dixie State beat UVU in overtime, 80-75.

The latest edition of the Old Hammer rivalry was a good one throughout the entire contest.
Dixie State won the first half by four points and Utah Valley outscored the Blazers by four points over the final 20 minutes of regulation to force extra time.
However, in overtime, Dixie State won the five-minute period, 10-5.

After UVU’s Connor Harding sunk a foul shot with 11 seconds left in regulation, the Wolverines owned a three-point advantage and looked poised for victory.
With six seconds to go, Cameron Gooden buried a jumper while getting fouled to cut Dixie State’s deficit to only a point. Gooden nailed the free throw to knot the game and send it to overtime.
Frank Staine scored five of Dixie State’s 10 overtime points, including a big three-pointer with 2:07 left, to help the Trailblazers win the contest.

Dixie State finished the night outshooting Utah Valley 43.8 percent from the field to 40.6 percent. The Blazers connected on six more three-pointers than the Wolverines.
Hunter Schofield carried the Trailblazers with 26 points. Justin Harmon led UVU with 23 points.
With the result, the Blazers improved to a 13-14 overall record and 6-8 in Western Athletic Conference games. UVU fell to 17-9 on the season and 8-6 in WAC action.
Utah Valley’s next game is at home against the Seattle Redhawks on Thursday, February 24 at 6 p.m. (MDT) on ESPN+.
Dixie State’s next game is at home against the California Baptist Lancers on Thursday, February 24 at 7 p.m. (MDT) on ESPN+.
