Dixie State Tops UTRGV With Strong First Half

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State Trailblazers took down the UTRGV Vaqueros 85-74 on Saturday night after a strong first half performance at home.
Dixie State outscored UTRGV 50-33 in the first half, before the Vaqueros outscored DSU 41-35 in the second half.
Hunter Schofield led the way for the Trailblazers with 22 points and seven rebounds. Isaiah Pope chipped in 17 points and five boards. Dancell Leter had 15 points, while Frank Staine recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Dixie State shot 45% from the field, 33% from the three-point line and 57% from the free throw line. The big difference in the game was DSU outrebounding the Vaqueros 52-41.
Xavier Johnson led UTRGV with 22 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the three-point line. Justin Johnson dropped 21 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while Quinton Johnson II had 12 points and nine boards.
They shot 40% from the field, 36% from the three-point line and 53% at the foul line.
Dixie State improved their record to 10-10 overall and 3-4 in WAC play. They will hit the road to face Chicago State on Saturday, January 29 at 1 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
