PROVO, Utah – BYU football wide receiver Gunner Romney announced on social media that he is coming back to the Cougars for one more year.

Before the 2021 season, Romney told KSL Sports that he didn’t plan to come back for another season as his name was linked to some NFL draft buzz as a Senior Bowl watch list candidate. But with the extra year of eligibility available due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it created options for Romney, who now is going to run it back one more year.

Romney wrote on Instagram, “Unfinished business. Time to run it back.”

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver had 34 catches for 594 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games played in 2021. Romney dealt with multiple injuries and returned in short order from each of the three setbacks. But throughout his BYU career, Romney has been plagued with injuries. One more season to show he can stay healthy could only elevate his potential NFL draft stock.

Romney has proven to be a productive receiver at BYU with big playmaking ability. Romney has recorded 117 catches for 1,900 yards and nine touchdowns through four years.

With Romney turning down the NFL, he joins a wide receiver room that will also include Puka Nacua and Keanu Hill. The receiver room will also include Brayden Cosper, who returns from a season-ending injury. Along with Kody Epps, who has been dealing with a nagging foot injury, and Chase Roberts.

In November, Romney was honored at BYU’s Senior Day festivities, receiving a Senior Day blanket. But he had the chance to come back for one last ride in Provo. So Romney joins Lopini Katoa, Earl Tuioti-Mariner, and Joe Tukuafu as honored players coming back in 2022.
