PROVO, Utah – When BYU football announced they accepted an invitation to the Big 12 Conference last September, one of the top tasks for BYU AD Tom Holmoe was the future schedules.
As an FBS Independent, BYU has 12 games per year they need to schedule. Beginning in 2023, affiliation with the Big 12 will only require BYU to schedule three of four out-of-league so some need to go.
It comes as no surprise but the remaining two games against the Virginia Cavaliers are reportedly off the future books, per a report from FBSchedules.com.
The series initially began as a two-game tilt scheduled for 2019 and 2021. But Virginia asked to delay the 2019 meeting, and in return, BYU received an extra home game from the Hoos, a member of the ACC.
The first of the three games took place during the 2021 season, a 66-49 BYU victory that marked the return of former BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall back to Provo. Since that game in late October, Virginia didn’t win another game the remainder of the season and Mendenhall stepped down as the head coach.
Virginia has since hired Tony Elliott from Clemson’s staff to be the new head coach of the Hoos.
BYU currently has 10 games still remaining on the 2023 football schedule.
