Provo, UT – The No. 13 ranked BYU Cougars football team finished the 2021 regular season with a win over the USC Trojans 35-31.

They completed the year winning all five games against teams from the PAC-12 conference.

It’s the first time in the Kalani Sitake era that BYU football had back-to-back 10 win seasons.

2006 through 2009 was the previous time the football program had consecutive double digit winning seasons.

Here are some takeaways from arguably the best season in the independent era.

Jaren Hall is a special talent

Following in the footsteps of Zach Wilson wasn’t going to be easy for the next BYU quarterback.

There were big shoes to fill, but Jaren Hall did an excellent job at quarterback this season for BYU.

He finished the year throwing for 2,583 yards with 20 touchdown passes and only five interceptions.

Remember, he only played 10 games due to injury.

Hall proved to be a true dual threat this season adding 420 yards on the ground with three touchdowns.

If Hall can remain healthy throughout his career, he’s likely to become another BYU quarterback playing on Sunday’s.

BYU football overcame injuries.

This BYU team struggled with injuries this season.

Several positions defensively were playing third stringers against USC.

Multiple offensive lineman missed significant time, and yet the offense continued to flourish.

The linebacker position only saw one linebacker start and finish all 12 games, that being Ben Bywater.

Depth was certainly tested, but it was also developed.

2022 could reach even higher heights thanks to player development seen this season due to injury.

Tyler Allgeier becomes one of the great BYU running backs

Tyler Allgeier had another 100 yard rushing day for the Cougar offense.

He finished the regular season with 1,409 rushing yards on the year.

That’s second best for a single season mark in BYU history. He only trails Luke Staley who finished the 2001 season with 1,582 yards en route to a Doak Walker award.

With BYU trailing by three points late in the 4th quarter against USC, offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick turned to the ground game.

The BYU rushing attack delivered to score the go-ahead touchdown.

Nobody, myself included, thought Allgeier would become an all-timer when he was moved to running back full-time prior to the 202o season.

He’s firmly cemented himself as one of the great BYU running backs.

Allgeier was often the best player on the field when playing against seven power five opponents.

The former walk-on will be playing in NFL whenever he decides to make the jump.
